Fight against climate disruption – 20th Climate Conference (Lima, December 9 to 12, 2014)

Laurent Fabius, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, will participate, from today, in the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework on Climate Change in Lima.

As Laurent Fabius indicated, three watchwords will guide France’s actions: urgency, ambition and hope.

Urgency first of all, because scientific analysis and everyday observation show that there’s increasingly serious climate disruption due to greenhouse gases. Sea levels are rising, there’s increased hot weather, and the number of extreme weather events is increasing.

The second watchword is ambition. The goal of the Lima Conference is to start identifying points of consensus and define a common approach for determining the national contributions that each country must make during the first quarter of 2015.

And lastly hope, notably because Europe, the United States and China have already made commitments. The Lima Conference is a key step toward reaching a universal agreement on the fight against climate disruption in Paris in December 2015 (COP21). Mr. Laurent Fabius and the French delegation will officially launch preparations for COP21 in Lima on December 12. France is mobilized to ensure the success of the 2015 Paris Climate Conference, which will be the largest diplomatic conference ever held in France.
